July 22nd

The tide has finally turned in the fish cleaning house. Who’s ever been eating the fish guts after they are dumped each day, must be thinking they were enrolled in Weight-Watchers lately. In other words, even with the expanded slot limit, the catches have been quite a bit smaller this past week. Last Saturday, heavy rain and storms rolled through in early afternoon and kept most everyone off the lake until Sunday. A few limits showed up early Saturday but most reported tough fishing. Since then, the fishing pressure has been way down during the week. And catch rates have been slower as well. Some of our guests have experienced the exception while fishing with our guide boat. Limits have been the story from them, trolling lead core rigs. So the walleyes, for now, are slower. Everyone is still getting enough for a good meal each outing but limits are fewer, no doubt.

Muskie fishermen have been out in bigger numbers this past week with reports being spotty at best. Some are seeing a few fish and some are not. One of our guests did report landing two good fish late one evening. Everyone is optimistic that the muskie action will kick in to full gear in the next week or two.

Some of guests have been chasing the smallmouth, with yet another week of fast action. Any of the rock ridges and humps along the Knox Point area have been good. Best action has been on slip-bobber rigs with night crawlers under them or trolling small crank baits. Best depths have been 3- to 9ft.

As a great summer of fishing and weather continues, we say THANK YOU to everyone for their loyalty to The Red Door! Our goal is to always make sure your Lake Mille Lacs area experience is the best it can be. Be sure to get your late summer muskie trip reservations in soon and your fall trolling plans in place. THANK YOU, as we look forward to being your home away from home very soon!
